Unity Sand Ceremony

An elegant, inexpensive alternative to the Unity Candle Ceremony — pour coloured sand together to create a lasting memento of two lives becoming one.

The Unity Sand Ceremony is similar to the Unity Candle Ceremony. Instead of using two different candles to light a single candle, couples pour different coloured sand from separate containers into one container. The mixing of the sand represents the mixing of the individuals' lives as one. The Unity Sand Ceremony has become more popular since the early 2000s and serves as an alternative to the Unity Candle Ceremony.

Components of the ceremony are one large vase and two smaller vases or containers that contain coloured sand. The bride and groom pour sand from the small vases into the large vase to produce a lasting memento of their wedding. Engraving the vases with names and the wedding date makes the piece even more personal.

The popularity of the Unity Sand Ceremony skyrocketed in 2004 after Trista Rhen and Ryan Sutter performed the ceremony on The Bachelorette, watched by more than 26 million viewers. Since then, a thriving marketplace has grown around the tradition.

The origin of the ceremony is disputed — some credit Native American traditions, while others point to Hawaii. Because of the possible Hawaiian connection and its beautiful setting, many couples perform the ceremony on the beach.

The Unity Sand Ceremony signifies the uniting of the bride and groom as one. When the sand is in separate vases, it represents the couple before marriage. As they pour the sand into the large vase together, the two lives come together — mingled, they become one.

Whether you're planning a lavish celebration or something simpler and more intimate, the Unity Sand Ceremony is perfect for any budget and an elegant way to leave your wedding with memories that last a lifetime.
